Cops rescue kidnapped 6-year-old son of trader

Government authorities rescued the six-year-old son of a Filipino-Chinese businessman in Davao City  Thursday morning in Barangay Sinawilan, Digos City, Davao del Sur.

The successful operation also led to the killing of one kidnapper and the arrest of his companion.

Supt. Leonardo A. Felonia, regional chief of the Regional Intelligence Unit 11 of the Philippine National Police Intelligence Group, identified the victim as  Dave Anthony Jaime Chu, a resident of Matina, Davao City.

Felonia said Chu was snatched by his abductors at 3 p.m. on October 17 at Matina Central Elementary School in Matina and was brought to unknown direction.

Immediately after the incident, the victim’s parents sought the intervention of Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who directly issued a directive to authorities to conduct pursuit and rescue operation.

With this, joint operatives of RIU 11 led by Felonia, Davao City Police Office, PACER, Regional Intelligence Division of Police Regional Office 11, and Davao City Public Safety Command met to plan out the operation.

The kidnappers were demanding P2 million in ransom but there was a negotiation and the ransom demand was reduced to P180,000.

Felonia said at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, operatives conducted follow up operation at Barangay Sibulan, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur to entrap the kidnappers after ransom pay off in exchange for the release of the victim however suspects after receiving the money at 2: 30 a.m. on Thursday fled taking with them the victim.

Felonia said that sensing that the suspects had reneged on their promise to release the victim they were immediately pursued by the joint operating teams that resulted to the arrest of one kidnapper identified as Joel Reyes Moda, 18, of Doña Pilar Subd., Sasa, Davao City at Barangay Bato, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

He said further operation conducted also resulted to the rescue of the victim who was  abandoned   at the interior part of Barangay Sinawilan, Digos City.

Another pursuit operation by the operating units resulted to the shootout with one Ferdinand Phala, 26, of Crossing Bayabas, Toril, Davao City at around 8:30 a.m. in Babisa Village, Lizada, Toril, Davao City.

Felonia said Phala tried to resist arrest and even attempted to lob a hand grenade at the operating troops which prompted to shoot him dead.

He said the victim was reunited with his parents and was brought to the Southern Philippines Medical Center for medical examination while the arrested suspect is now under the custody of the authorities while necessary charges are being prepared to be filed against him.

Meanwhile, the mayor and the vice mayor lauded the police for the successful operation.
