Soldiers kill 6 `extortionists’ in Compostela Valley

DAVAO CITY – Government soldiers foiled a supposed extortion attempt and killed six armed men Monday afternoon in Barangay Malinawon, Mawab town in Compostela Valley.

Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza,  spokesperson of the 10th Infantry Battalion, said that the incident occurred at around 3 p.m. when members of the Army’s 66th Infantry Battallion under Lt. Col. Antonino Florendo sighted a group of organized crime group reportedly led by a certain “Hiker” in Barangay Malinawon.

Paniza said the armed men were allegedly on board a carnapped Sadam truck heading towards a banana plantation to harass residents to give in to their extortion demands.

He said government troops immediately opened fire at the suspects, killing the six of them and recovered five high powered firearms, including a 30 caliber machine gun.

“The successful defense was due to the timely information by the community who were fed up of these criminals and fast reaction of the government troops”, Paniza said. (ASA)
