Never an ordinary run

It was never an ordinary fun run during last Sunday morning’s Takbo Para sa Bata, a yearly run organized by the ABS-CBN’s Bantay Bata 163.

Aside from the usual veteran, elite and neophyte runners, a young couple together with their first-born child joined for the first time the footrace but the father, Richard Allan Quitinio, had to run while pushing the stroller of Chadric Elmar, who was born not normal. The supportive mother, Maric Joy, was also there to help carry the load.

The three-kilometer distance – starting from the carpark of Victoria Plaza and turning around fronting the office of the Social Security System (SSS) along J.P. Laurel Avenue – was completed with fulfilment and joy.

“We are very happy. This is our first time to join and this may not be our last. This is really fun. We might be joining in the next fun runs together with our son,” Richard shared, adding that their very purpose in joining is to give tribute to Chadric, who is turning 6 on September 16.

He is literally the babysitter (Bantay-Bata) as his wife is the one working to meet the family’s ends. Maric is employed with ENZI Corporation, a financial management company. They live in Spring Valley, Diversion Road, Buhangin.

Cris, Morallas, 81, also seized the moment to be awarded as the oldest runner and completed the five-kilometer distance ahead of other young runners. She is  a proud member of the Davao Sunday Runners Club.

The youngest runner award went to two-year-old Kylle Busales, who appeared to be surprised when he was accompanied by his mother to receive the award. It was his first time to run in a formal running event.

Organizers also awarded Computer Sense College of Communications and Technology to have the biggest number of delegation. The student-runners reached to 285 and received a huge frame and a trophy.

Winners for the three categories – 3k, 5k, and 10k – were the same elite runners who won the previous fun run activities. (ASA)
