K to 12 starter: Davao Light donates one more kindergarten school building

Some 120 enrollees in the kindergarten level under the new Department of Education K t0 12 program at New Katipunan in Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte found a new and conducive learning facility starting last August 23, 2012.

This was made possible after Davao Light & Power Co. and its social development arm, the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (AFI), turned over to the Aklat Gabay at Aruga Tungo sa Pag-angat at Pag-asa (AGAPP) Foundation of Pinky Aquino-Abellada, a 2-classroom kindergarten school building, in compliance with its commitment to help the Presidential sister’s advocacy for better quality education.

AGAPP in turn, through the recommendation of the Department of Education – Davao del Norte Division, nominated New Katipunan Elementary School in Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte, as the beneficiary of the new building.

Davao Light being a leading member of the Aboitiz Group which is a major partner of AGAPP, was assigned to build the kinder school, New Katipunan Elementary School being located in its northen franchise area.

The New Katipunan AGAPP building is the fifth to be constructed by Davao Light. In 2011 the Aboitiz electric distribution utility constructed three kindergarten schools in Davao City. This year, the company was assigned two units of AGAPP kindergarten building. The first was turned over last June 7 with Ms. Aquino-Abellada personally attending the turn-over ceremony. The unit is constructed at Catalunan Grande Elementary School in Catalunan Grande, Davao City. Each AGAPP building costs rouighly P1.2 million.

The project is part of Davao Light’s continuing support to the Department of Education’s “Adopt-a-School” program.

Davao Light Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Arturo M. Milan initially turned over the building to Ms. Jocy Ledesma, AGAPP representative in Mindanao. In turn, the two formally turned the new building over to then Officer-in-Charge of the DepEd Davao del Norte Division Ms. Cristy Epe who subsequently handed over the ceremonial key to the new building to Mr. Benny Batoon, the principal of New Katipunan Elementary School.

Ms. Aquino-Abellada in a message read for her by Ms. Ledesma, to school officials that education is a primary focus of the Davao Light’s and Aboitiz Foundati9on’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) program believing that education moulds today’s youth to become the leaders of the country in the future.

She said the teachers and the students as well as parents who have children whose classes are housed in the new building should do their best to ensure that it can be used to the fullest.

Mr. Milan for his part, said he is extremely happy to partner with AGAPP and to have the donated building constructed at New Katipunan Elementary School campus. The new facility holds a lot of promise for the kinder students.
