DAVAO CITY – The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) here is meeting Monday  in a hearing with the management of the Island City Express to conduct further investigation after one of its units figured in an accident that killed five people and injured 22 others at the Island Garden City of Samal on October 30.

LTFRB-Davao spokesperson Edgar Violan said that his office would require the bus company to submit a detailed explanation on what really happened.

Violan said it came to their attention that the mishap took place after the ill-fated bus lost it brakes that prompted the driver to crash the vehicle in the mountainside.

“But we have to see the larger picture of the story. We will not speculate,” he said, adding that the city government under Mayor Aniano Antalan is also invited to attend the hearing.

The LTFRB-Davao already issued a 30-day suspension against eight of the 23 buses of ICE pending investigation.

Violan said they have decided to suspend only one of the two franchises of the bus company, which covered the eight suspended units, due to the exodus of passengers during All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days.

He said the Island City Express has one more franchise that covers 15 units.

Violan said the suspension takes effect Wednesday morning upon receipt of the management and will last for 30 days during which the Land Transportation Office (LTO) office in Davao will test and inspect the roadworthiness of the company’s eight units.

He added that the company’s drivers and conductors will also be required to attend driving seminar and undergo drug tests. (ASA)
